WESTMINSTER PALACE

The Palace of Westminster is the seat of the British Parliament. Also known as the Houses of Parliament (Houses of Parliament), hosts the two parliamentary chambers, the House of Lords and House of Commons. It is located in the city of Westminster, one of the municipalities that make up London, where some of the most representative monuments of the city such as Westminster Abbey.

The House of Parliament or Westminster Palace, as it is known today, dates from 1870. A brutal fire destroyed in 1834 virtually all the buildings that made up the former palace and had to be rebuilt almost completely. Until the fire, the Palace was the residence of the kings in medieval times. Its origins date back to the eleventh century, when the area rose in a residence for a Saxon monarch. parliament-london The building was expanded, such as the construction of the Great Hall, one of the few spaces that then survived the fire of 1834.

After a fire in 1834, a great debate in London on how to rebuild the Palace of Westminster, after the proposal from the Commission which was tasked, who said that reconstruction should either follow or classic gothic or opened. In the discussion that won the Gothic style, and began to be built the new Palace of Westminster, saving what the fire had not destroyed, like the Great Hall, the Jewel Tower, cloisters and crypt.

Westminster Abbey
Today, inside the Palace of Westminster has four floors, and in total hosts over a thousand rooms. On the ground floor offices and restaurant area are located; on the first floor, the master, the House of Lords and House of Commons, one south and one north and other important venues (Royal Gallery, House of Prince, etc) are. The upper two floors are for office and meeting spaces.
